36 ford trans removal
With an experienced mechanic doing the work, how long do you think the average time would be to remove a 36 ford pickup transmission. The truck is completely stock with the torque tube drive shaft and mechanical brakes. The rear end would have to be lowered and pulled back. I am trying to calculate what would be a fair price to have this done.

4 hours to remove, another 4 hours to reinstall. Easy!! Probably about 6 hours entire job if I was doing it.

JM35, a fabulous mentor, schooled me on a few time savers include making temporary longer studs to use to help line up the transmission.
Have a piece of thin flashing to help guide when the rear comes forwards to prevent it hanging up on the floor. Get some wheels without tires and put them on the back to improve clearance.

I would venture to say that if the mechanic has never done this before it will take 4 hours from the time you jack the car up to remove the transmission and then another 5 hours to reinstall it. It can become a tedious process because of the torque tube, unexpected difficulties and because you're lying on your back on the ground.
The first time I did it I forgot to reinstall the throw out bearing. That mistake made it a much longer task as I had to remove and replace the transmission twice. Take photos as you go and use the new style universal clam shell bell o-ring seal. Here's picture of that o-ring seal that replaces the original cork seal inside the clam shell that covers the universal joint. Thank you! As I look at the picture, it appears that the bell rubber is split. Is this so that it can be replaced without separating the driveline? |

However, you would also have to cut the paper gaskets and install them with the cut at the top. Take a look at the photos in this thread (from my 40) that may help.

Thanks for the input guy's this is great info keep it coming I am sure there are others out there who can benefit from it. I just might tackle this myself if I can build my confidence up. When I was a teenager I had a 37 pickup and I remember going to the junk yard and getting a transmission pulling the one out of the truck in the drive way and replacing it no problem in a couple hours, but there was no torque tube involved. I was young and dumb then didn't know any better, now I am old and cautious and have seen things go bad to really bad in a hurry.

Don't forget to add one hour of procrastination on the perfect start day. And also add two hours to figure out who borrowed your jack stands, floor jack and trouble light.
