Looking for '38 and '39 Tonner Owners - Current or Past
I am looking to see if I can compile a log of the 1938 and 1939 Tonners that are still out there in any condition and in any configuration. I have a '38 Tonner Express that I restored to stock. It was a frame up restoration. I put together a short 'survey' which can be accessed at the following link:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...u-2ew/viewform I would also appreciate any leads you might know of and any other places where I think I could post this search. Thank You - Bob |

The link below will take you to a document showing the information I have been able to accumulate to date. It's an interesting compilation. I hope to be adding pictures shortly for each entry.
I've removed the link because of difficulty viewing and replaced it with this current attachment. Last edited by revenski; 08-13-2020 at 03:52 PM. Reason: Difficulty viewing the data |

The biggest issues are the font size and table length (horizonal). If you increase the font and the cell size vertically it would help a lot. The link is in pdf formant, so difficult to do much with it.

I've reworked the data for easier viewing in an attachment and dropped the link.

Yep, understand all of that, but doesn't help getting it into a format the will post. The aspect ratio (height to width) is the major problem.

Re: Looking for '38 and '39 Tonner Owners - Current or Past
Revenski, as you know I am very interested in the tonners, but my 38 slipped away from me almost 20 years ago and I no longer have any papers on it or records. I wish I knew where it ended up. It got shipped to Upstate NY. My 47 tonner is better suited to my use though as it fits a sheet of plywood (or 30) flat on the floor. And the brakes are hydraulic. That '38 was my first love with a flattie and a guy never forgets that.

Here are pics of each of the trucks. The pics are numbered 1 through 12. No pic for #2. This is the same order as the charts although there are no column numbers on the charts above. It's been a project just getting the little I have published to this board.

Re: Looking for '38 and '39 Tonner Owners - Current or Past
A buddy got this from the Rochester area as a basket case was told it was a 60 hp wrecker ( 1 ton 60 ...why??) excellent sheet metal no motor but some included
We restored with a 8BA and a 39 granny trans I had went like a snail. I painted with a tractor supply IH red and wheels were modified to radial rims He was born the same year and hated to work under the skinny hood standing onhis head so we did a tilt front end It’s now mine, got some winter use ( only thing that would start at 5 degrees in westNY) so needs rust repair now.plan to re-do next spring. Still slow as a snail, must address if I keep it |

Rod... Thank you for the addition. I'll work it into the survey. That front end modification is a considerable amount of work. Is it a '38 or '39?

Re: Looking for '38 and '39 Tonner Owners - Current or Past
According to Wagner's book the first '38 tonners , the V8s at least had 4.10 rear axles. Revenski's does and mine did. With 7.50x17s at 33-34" dia they went down the hiway at a good clip. 70 was not a problem. The problem was the hills, and with a load. Why would you buy a tonner if you were hauling light? Anyhow by '39 the standard gear ratio was 4.86 IIRC. The 60 hp had something in the sixes for a rear axle. As stated, but Why? Depression era and cost of fuel I would imagine.

It is a 39, may try a modern overdrive trans, after looking into Somehow modifying a later rear to use the same wheels/hubcaps.

At one time they sold wide-5 wheel adaptors, but not sure they are still available. Guess it wouldn't be too difficult to fabricate some.

Re: Looking for '38 and '39 Tonner Owners - Current or Past
As I Rember there were 6 lugs on 7 1/2” bolt circle so oddball no real way to get a good rear under it and retain the cool hubcaps
So will research and share if I find a solution |

Six lugs on a ford? But I haven't had a '39.
