Default Converting a flathead v8 to a 12 volt system

Is there somewhere i could go to read a discussion of converting an early ford v8 car from a 6 volt to a 12 volt electrical system? Thanks for any references you can site.

A Google search yields this:
https://www.google.com/search?q=how+...hrome&ie=UTF-8
Then do a Fordbarn search. Converting 6V to 12V. You will find lots of info.
Here's a helpful thread from a few days ago.

Once you go to 12 you'll never want to go back to 6.

Numerus threads here on the Barn on the topic.

Any number of sites on the web on the topic. http://www.how-to-build-hotrods.com/6v-to-12v.html

But if it were me I would stick with the expert advice here on the Barn on topics such as the best voltage reducers, etc.

Can someone confirm that a 1940 ford generator can be converted to 12 volt operation by replacing the field coils with those from a 1956 ford and continue to use the original 01A armature. Is there anywhere that this conversion is discussed?

It's discussed a lot of places. A search will turn up a lot of references.

A Rumbleseat post:

"I don’t understand why flatheaders take their 6V generators to a rebuilder and
have them converted to 12V. The charge is pretty high, usually around $100, when
you consider only the generator fields have to be changed. The fields from a
Falcon/Mustang/Comet bolt up in flathead generator cases."

"Like many things Ford did, there always seems to be an exception. If you’re
using an original ‘39 or ‘40 generator, you will have to drill a hole in the case
and install a grounded terminal for the new 12V field. Ford grounded these
internally during ‘39-’40 and depended on the generator mounting for a ground.
This new external ground terminal will replace the existing internal ground.
These ‘39-’40 generators have only two external terminals instead of the usual
three."

"I’ve been told 12V Falcon/Mustang/Comet complete generator cases will
interchange with 6V flathead 8BA generator cases by simply grinding a locator pin
slot in the 12V case, but I’ve not done any of these. It’s something to look at
if you’re doing one of these change overs."

"A consideration: The armatures for a 12V Falcon/Mustang/Comet and a Ford 6V two
brush generator are a one-way interchange because the 6V armature winding uses
about twice the size wire as the 12V. The 6V armature works on 12V, but the 12V
armature won’t work on 6V (the 12V armature wire size is too small for the
current the 6V produces). Okay, okay..... there is one more thing when using a
6V armature in a 12V generator.... a 6V armature makes only about 75%-80% of the
amperage the 12V armature does because there is one less commentator bar and
winding in a 6V armature."

I have a number of flatheads all run and start good on 6 volts.
I don't see the need for 12 volts. All of a sudden after 70 or 80
years a few wizards think we need to change?? G.M.

George is absolutely correct and there are many that have 12V systems, the pictured books are also great references.

The "official 12-volt conversion guide", Randy Rundle is full of good information. I would also recommend to get the latest Ron Francis wiring catalog & encyclopedia again full of wiring knowledge 6 & 12 volt.

Most importantly, grounding your electrical system. Keep them clean and shiny

The reasons for converting to 12V become self-evident if you break down on the road and need to buy parts. Plus, 12V permits the installation of other electronic gizmos.

In the end 6V is fine and dandy for those who cherish OEM and 12V is an upgrade for those desiring more.
