Cabriolet Landau Knobs question
Two part question...
Were the Landau knobs the same on all years of cabriolet? Specifically, 68B and 68C. Ive seen on a 68C, the knobs look like they have a stainless cover crimped over the outside, but on the 68B, they look like a solid machined knob. Any insight?

Re: Cabriolet Landau Knobs question
Thanks! This is great information! My 68C appears to have the middle one from above, stainless on stainless with the not perfect crimping. My old 68B are one piece solid with three dimple holes similar to the one above with two holes on back, but again, it's a solid cast piece.
Thanks again!

Re: Cabriolet Landau Knobs question
The 68C and 180A are the same prop knobs 1-3/4" .. I have on my 180A n.o.s. orginial Stainless with aluminum backs. I also collected a few Brass /chrome plated ones too [1-3/4"] .I believe they were used on early 180A's and Cabriolet before going to Stainless steel in mid 1930's...Roadsters were 1-1/2" . WardAZ i have only seen 1 other with the 2 holes on the back? I restored a few before i came across the n.o.s. ones i have by drilling some holes in the back to pick out the dents ..The repro's you can pick out by the way they are crimped around the back edge. note: the nut on the back of the orginial ones are 1/4" tall as the repro's are 1/2" tall.

As I read the Judging Standards in "Area 9, Top", it says "Cabriolet knobs were nickle plated in 1929, chrome in 1930. These knobs were used into late 1930. In mid-1930 a new version was introduced with a cast aluminum back (unpolished) and a crimped stainless steel outer cover. This version was used for the remainder of production. (page 9-2) I should think you might consider ordering your own copy of the Judging Standards and Restoration Guidelines if you have an interest in this sort of thing. They DEFINE what is correct, regardless of what others have "Found" on their unrestored cars. |

Re: Cabriolet Landau Knobs question
I have not come across Stainless Steel [ backs] just the outer cover was stainless. Yes on the repro knobs .1 repro had a very poor crimping edge on the outer cover[early repro's]. A+L's has a better edge on the outer cover but the nut is 1/2" tall off back cover [1/4 " on all my orginials].. I know the 2 hole back was not drilled to pick out dents.I asked Al Lapore some time back about that and he had no idea ..I drill holes in the back to get to the dents. Then fill the holes and paint aluminum. There are alot of parts the Judging standard does not cover. If they did the book as one put it would stand 8 feet tall.
