Re: 1928 Model A Multi disc clutch and flywheel
Model T's have a similar type of clutch for high gear and the same problem with notches cut in the lugs. The repair is to slip U shaped channels over what is left of the lugs. The clutch disks are filed out a little if needed. The U shaped channel is a high grade of steel. I think it is formed but custom ones could be machined. The ones for Model T's may fit.

Re: 1928 Model A Multi disc clutch and flywheel
The U-shaped clips were not a repair item. They were introduced in late 1925 and mostly appear on the wider 26-7 transmission brake drums. A few examples of these lug shoes have appeared on short 1925 drums.
As I also have a ‘28, I don’t see any way to use these clips. |

Re: 1928 Model A Multi disc clutch and flywheel
I do drive, try to get it every couple of weeks for a drive nearby. It is not perfect but I sure enjoy it. Got a great assist from a almost local couple of great guys. They had a clutch with some FT Wayne relined discs, gave a great deal. I picked a flywheel from them too, but it may be in worse shape than mine.

Re: 1928 Model A Multi disc clutch and flywheel
The transmission case I have is the early ‘28 case with the larger bore for the idler gearshaft. My transmission is not too bad, will probably replace the bearings an the lower gear, but I am going to reinspect the cluster gear and shafts again before I decide on gears. The shaft bushings are close to new thickness with minimal wear in the case where the bushings ride. I do need to replace the clutch/brake pedal shaft and maybe the clutch through shaft in the bell housing. The pedal shaft has grooves worn in it and the through shaft has a fair amount of slop in it.
