Right on top is a hex plug that is stamped metal that may say "use heavy oil"

Re: '40 Steering Gear Box
Yes, right next to it.
Just last week I made a temporary fitting with a grease zerk installed so I could easily pack the gear box with corn head grease. Makes that task so much easier.

Re: '40 Steering Gear Box
Starting to look into the gear box lube issue and I see there are two bolts. One larger than the other. The larger one has a stamped image of a gear around it....I'm assuming that's the one for adjustment and the other is for adding lube, etc. Am I correct in that assumption ?
Thx....Mike |

Re: '40 Steering Gear Box
Yeah, the one for the lube is 5/8" across. The raised part that it threads into acts as a stop for the "star" wheel. The star wheel is the stop for the adjuster.
The above from memory. Mart. |

Oh boy......is was wet inside but almost empty ! I used Lucas Oil additive that is like STP, so I think that's better than nothing.
Thx all. Mike |

Re: '40 Steering Gear Box
Is it normal for box to leak a little and then settle to a certain level ? I'm getting a little leakage, but not excessive.
Thx |

Re: '40 Steering Gear Box
You might have to replace the seal of the sector shaft. Not to difficult but you need to remove the pitman arm to get to the seal.

Re: '40 Steering Gear Box
If it is leaking, it ought to keep leaking until empty, it won't find a level. That is assuming the leak is at the bottom, where the pitman shaft exits the box.
You could use the John Deere corn head grease recommended by many on here. That will remain thicker and be less inclined to leak. I use a locally sourced equivalent here in the UK and it works pretty well. Mart. |

Re: '40 Steering Gear Box
Mart, what's your locally sourced gloop? I've used the penrite 'box lube, that stayed in when oil would leak out. Also if you move the steering with the lid off ('box was out of the car, so I spooned the goop in) this stuff wraps and winds itself around all its bits, and made his steering a bit lighter.
I like this, but always open to other stuff. Martin. |

Re: '40 Steering Gear Box
Fuchs brand (good German make) in a big tin. Got it off ebay. Think I searched on 00 or something like that. (Fun looking at the Hornby stuff first).
Mart. Edit: Just searched it.. Fuchs Renolit 00 grease 29.99 for a 5kg tin. I got a fiver knocked off mine because the tin was dented. |

Re: '40 Steering Gear Box
Try some 00 grease, cornhead grease, etc.
The seal can be tricky to get out with the box in the car. Many times the sector shaft bushings are worn, so the seal will only be a temporary fix anyway. But, if the semi-fluid grease will stop your leak, and the car drives OK...call it good. Neal |
