R-10 OD solenoid replacement ?
When replacing the solenoid in the R-10 OD do I need to drain the oil first ?

Re: R-10 OD solenoid replacement ?
I have replaced a few overdrive solenoids on the R10 and if you twist and pull the solenoid out very quickly with the new one ready to immediately slip in and turn you will not loose much oil. Keep some type of catchall to capture what ever drips out then you can add just the right amount. Best if you can do this on a cold day so it drips very little.
The only problem you might encounter is that it is recommended to change the pawl shaft seal each time you remove the pawl shaft ''plunger rod ". I would suggest to pull the solenoid with a clean bucket to catch the oil drippings then you will be able to clean the solenoid good on your workbench before installing the oil seal and I would carefully use permatex to insure seal stays in place. Use a minimum amount of permatex and do not get on the rubber of the seal. |

Re: R-10 OD solenoid replacement ?
Ok. Thank you for the information. First time replacing a solenoid. I got a 12v with the seal so I will probably just drain it out and take my time. Weird thing is 2nd gear doesn’t work in OD but 3rd does. After testing today I think it might be the governor. Pretty weird I figured if it working in 3rd should work in 2nd.

Re: R-10 OD solenoid replacement ?
The governor on speed is 23 to 25 MPH. This is based on the rear axle ratio being 3.92:1 or there abouts. If the axle ratio is changed it will change the on speed. The governor switch contacts may be a bit fuzzy too.
I've replaced several operating solenoids without changing the seal. This would be a matter of owner preference. It depends on how old the seal is and condition of the plunger shaft. They're not too hard to replace. |

Re: R-10 OD solenoid replacement ?
Does the seal go on the solenoid or inside the case ? I will probably be able to tell when I pull it out. I guess I need to put power to the solenoid to activate the shaft to pull the old one out and put the new 12v one in.

Re: R-10 OD solenoid replacement ?
The seal is in the overdrive casting, not on the solenoid. Oil has not come out when I have removed the solenoid.

Re: R-10 OD solenoid replacement ?
when I removed the solenoid on my 51 Merc, I removed both bolts, rotated the solenoid to the 1:00 position, and pulled it straight out. To put it back in I did the reverse, that is , position the solenoid at the 1:00 position and insert it into the adapter housing and rotate it to the 12:00 position. pull out on it lightly, it should have some spring tension on it , indicating that it is engaged correctly. reinstall the bolts and torque to spec. do not put any sealer between the solenoid and the adapter housing, or you may not get a good ground . ---- Jim

Re: R-10 OD solenoid replacement ?
Thank you. I did some testing and everything was working good. I took it for a drive and 2nd gear OD was working not sure what I did. I’m still going to put the 12v solenoid in so I appreciate all the information.
