Police verion of the eV-8 engine
Did Henry produce a police version of the eV-8 engine?

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
yes the Mercury engine with 90HP. With a VERY special order they could be installed into Fords. See Kubes posting in regard to his 1940 Ford convertible on this web page.

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
Clem,
This may be later than what you are looking for, but Ford offered the 110 hp Mercury engine in the 1950 Police version as well. This is a page from the 1950 Ford Police Car brochure. Ken

Ken's 36--does the police brochure show the right side (DS) dual exhaust manifold?

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
To my knowledge, Ford never had a police engine, other than stock. However some dealers would add dual exhaust and other speed equipment. Also rear axle rations could be ordered. A popular one in the Denver area was a 4 bl cam and Hi compression heads. When I went out to Denver to visit Paul Garagan (Rumble seat) We visited a retired Ford dealer who had a restoration business as a hobby. It's the only place i ever saw NOS engines, cranks, cams and most everything else you could think of for a Flathead engine and cars. I wonder what ever happened to that stuff??

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
No, Ford did not provide the dual exhaust option for police cars until 1953. I wish!

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
'53 was a year for a Police option. There is a full brochure on this and the Merc was the engine listed. Also station wagon suspension, heavy seats and a large generator as I recall. The heavy suspension I installed in my sedan and it helped with the cornering. Newc

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
The engine I have was given to me by a friend. It’s said to be out of a 53 police special. The heads say EAB, supposed to have a 4” crank. It’s gonna be awhile before I can get in to it.

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
I see the 'new' Interceptor V8 rated at 125 HP. I thought the 255's were rated at 110 HP? So...what is special about the 'Interceptor'?

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
Didn't the Mercury go to an advertised 125HP in '52 in Ford went to 110 HP?

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
The INterceptor is the Mercury engine. 125 hp in 52. Up from 110 in 1951.

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
Ah, so...it's only a sales gimmick...or can someone explain the 15HP 'claimed increase' from 51 to 52?

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
This is from the Model A thread.
"To distinguish the higher compression "police head" from the regular head, Ford cast a 'B' on the head. When the 'B' engine came out, since Ford was already using 'B' for the Police Head, they used 'C' on the head because it was different from the previous heads (3 bolt water pump, mainly)." I have heard the B story for 50 years. So from 1932 until 1950 police engines did not exist?(Except the 111 Mercoford 1940 cars reported by Kube. Seemed like there would to thousands of Mercofords needed. Another mystery |

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
My Mercury book says they increased the compression ratio from 6.8 to 7.2 in 1952 to get the extra horsepower. Torque increased from 206 to 210 pounds in 1952.

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
If you read JWL's book, it doubtful if any flathead ever made over 100 hp. The Merc might have come close.

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
You would assume that whatever variation there is/was between current horsepower/torque readings and the Ford published readings were fairly consistent on Fords part. So it would be the relative differences that have any significates.

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
FoMoCo started to offer the 255 engine in the Ford cars in 1949 or 50 along with the 10-inch Long type clutch and the Dana 44 rear axle as used in the station wagons for a "Police Package". This was done throughout the 8BA era. There are brochures illustrating this put out by Ford.
The cam was changed in 1952 for the EAB and the Mercury EAC. That and the higher compression heads boosted horsepower ratings a bit in those years. Kube has mentioned the 95 horse power 239 99A type engine that was first available in 1940 for special order for Ford cars (police & emergency purposes). A letter from a law enforcement agency on letter head had to be submitted for the order to justify the special build of a car of this type. Ford also had special high compression heads that generally have an AS suffix associated with them that could be ordered by the dealers. Some folks also called them Denver heads in the 8BA era. The 1940 offering for police and emergency services was short lived and the war also had an affect on the loss of these options. |

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
In 53 the police special in a ford involved a 4" merc engine with the funky mercy only teapot carb, ford heads, painted tangerine. Cant say for sure about dual exhaust being standard (mandatory) or optional but I'm thinking optional. So I'd say that would be pretty good factory setup.
My grandad ordered a 53 wagon with this engine for use in his surveying business. Sure enough upon teardown it had the 4 inch crank. |

Re: Police verion of the eV-8 engine
Oh yeh; As far as dual exhausts; Drake at one time mfg'd the correct dual left manifolds for the 49-51 and another for the 52-53. I still have one new Drake left dual type for the 52/3. Newc
