Default Flathead not staying started with a very rough idle

The car is a 1940 Ford Deluxe with a 6 volt flathead. 59AB heads, crab style distributer, and I'm guessing around a '56 carb. I drove the car the other day and it ran fine until I returned home. It then shut off and would not restart. A few days later, after not attempting to start, I went to start the car and it took a few tries but it started. It had a knock on the right side of the engine with white smoke coming out of the exhaust on the right side. Black smoke coming out of the left side exhaust. The idle was so rough that I had to use the throttle to keep it running. Any recommendations would be great. Distributer has new points and carb was just rebuilt. Thanks

Sounds like you need a better rebuilder on both items. Ken ct. Why are you running a 56 carb on a 40 some engine???

white smoke is either water or oil, does the smoke go away pretty fast? if so its water in the combustion changer, cracked head of block, blown head gasket, if smoke hangs in the air and wont disapate quickly its oil burning in the engine, black smoke is engine running rich, carb needs looking at, pull the plugs and examine them, sooty black plug means to much fuel, sooty oily plugs means oil is getting past the rings, a plug that is snow white with no carbon on it means water is getting into the combustion chamber
