Thanks everyone!
The 8BA family of V8 engines, manufacture beginning in 1947 for Bonus trucks, was the last of the flathead line and the only type that finally worked on the issue of more even cooling from rear to front. This and the deletion of the rear half bell on the block casting made these types the best at cooling and the most interchangeable for transmission adaptation. Some may argue which type is better and that's fine but it's hard to beat the 8BA family and especially with the Mercury 4-inch crankshaft installed.
