Default Repairing 1935 tail light stands.

I have a '35 tail light stand with both studs broken and looking for ideas on how to repair it. My This is not going to be re-painted as we are trying to preserve the patina. Since the studs are sort of captive in the base, it is not possible to drive them out with out taking the thing apart. So, since they are essentially carriage bolts, my idea is to cut slots in the base and try to slide them out.
Anyone dealt with this? Have a better idea?
