Clever! Must wear a mask during operation.

I’m slow. Does the center piece pivot?

Re: Homemade brake shoe acrer
Ohh Bob, be careful with that setup!! If that belt grabbed the lining unexpectedly, it could spin your hand right into that belt and hurt you badly. Otherwise, very ingenious idea!

Great idea I’m going to try this. What grit sandpaper do you use?

Re: Homemade brake shoe acrer
Thank you for sharing and I love this idea. Can you tell us how it works? I'm not following how adjusting the center screw creates the different arc in the swing.

Re: Homemade brake shoe acrer
A short video of the grinder in action would help explain how it works.

CAUTION!! Whether working indoors or outdoors with this contraption, please be aware of the hazardous dust created. Set up a shop vacuum as close as possible to where the grinding action is taking place to scavenge the dust, and wear a good quality mask like painters use. Insist that bystanders do the same. You DON'T want any of that stuff in your lungs!!

It's how I did mine and they work great. It also involved putting chalk lines across the shoes then driving the car and then seeing where the shoes needed to be sanded off, to fit the contour of the drum. Last edited by Merc Cruzer; 08-02-2023 at 07:44 PM. |

Re: Homemade brake shoe acrer
For those who may want to make your own grinder, check out my Barrett brake lining riveter and grinder. You could probably make up a similar grinder. I don't have a shoe to demonstrate, but the green steel disc shows how a shoe fits on it. The cradle is adjustable.

Re: Homemade brake shoe acrer
For all of us slow ones ...
It looks like there are two circular pieces of wood. The top one is cut off at the bottom. These two revolve together. The brake shoe is attached to the top one. The shoe attached to the top circular wood can be moved in and out sliding on the bottom circular wood by loosening the nut which clamps the two circular pieces off wood together. The size adjuster screw means the shoe can be moved in or out fractionally. |

Re: Homemade brake shoe acrer
This is something looming in my future.
Is there any concern about grit ending up in the linings? |
