Chuck Yeager
Guys
Go to the HAMB website and read the Eulogy regarding test pilot Chuck Yeager. Also the comments as he drove a Model A with a neat story. Trying to figure out how to import the writeup and comments to this site. Jon Crane Rochester Mich |

“My relationship with speed is a complicated one. I tell myself that I’m not a speed demon and ultimately, that speed is not what I’m after; but that controlling speed as a variable is. Then again, I don’t know that I have ever owned a car that I didn’t want to make faster and perform better.” I can tell you with some authority that speed at altitude is a very non-visual technical affair. When your altitude can be expressed in miles, there are no reference marks. Nothing whizzes by to tell you how fast you are going. At mid altitudes whizzing through clouds is interesting, and sometimes you even see The Pilot's Cross, but it's wisps, flashes, quick ins and outs. 120 leaving the runway is far more exciting than 500 at 41,000 feet. Heck, 50 in my model A has more excitement to it than cruise climb through 15,000.... RIP Chuck Yeager. Those that blaze the trail should have a special seat on the flight west. Re: Chuck Yeager
Chuck mentioned the pass it on model A at Edwards AFB in his book. The car was passed on from person to person at Edwards after pilot's would be reassigned and move on. Chuck and a few others were hoping that the car would become an pass it on tradition but it eventually left with one of its owners.
It would be interesting to find out what happened to that car. |

Re: Chuck Yeager
I knew Chuck personally and had dinner with him at his house a couple times. I even met Glamourous Glennis before she died. I can tell you He was a VERY interesting character. We drove from Reno Nevada to his home in northern California and back one time. I remember that he had to drive, even though it was my rental car and that he didn't drive over the speed limit. He said he wasn't in a hurry any more.
