Can someone explain to me how the gasoline that was available in 1929 compares to the gasoline that we have in 2016-17 ? Thanks, Bill

The "regular gas" (not the "ethyl", which cost more) was slightly lower octane than what we have today. They did not put ethanol in it, but Ford was actually a proponent of using it.

This does not mean that the 10% ethanol gas that we are buying now will suddenly become 16% ethanol gas. No. It means that 6% more ethanol will be produced to blend into fuel. The maximum ethanol content in the fuel is still capped at no more than 10% (little known fact: it often less than 10%). There will just be more of it.

While there IS a lot of talk inside the EPA about increasing the maximum allowable ethanol content of regular gas to 15%, this has not happened yet. They are getting a lot of negative feedback on this proposal, because many vehicles run poorly on it. The suppliers have been asked by the EPA to describe how they will prevent this higher alcohol fuel from being introduced into a vehicle that is not designed to run on it. No firm proposals yet.

Relax... and go drive an old car.

Don't confuse this thread with facts. Some here are happiest when they are unhappy.

FACT: the EPA has proposed a production number of 19.8 BILLION gallons of ethanol. That is 1.7 BILLION gallons more than the current production. What has not been said here is the fact that the EPA is also proposing a 15% blend for cars manufactured after 2001. That is a whole different issue than the original post addressed.

Consider the fact that EPA is looking at a CAFE of 54 MPG in the near future. As mileage gets better and better and ethanol production keeps increasing every year, there is a very real problem lurking on the horizon. Finally, the EPA is pushing biodiesel even though VW is no longer selling diesel cars in the US. Mercedes warns against the use of biodiesel in their cars.

I pay $2.39 a gallon for non-ethanol gas delivered to the house and the few extra cents are worth it when it comes to improved mileage and I already see a difference in the performance of my small engines.
