Oil pan sludge
Anyone have any thoughts on cleaning oil pan sludge without removing pan. My thought was to drain oil and fill pan with diesel and let it sit. Then drain out the diesel. I don't want to run an oil/diesel mixture with the engine running afraid of circulating the sludge. The car has been sitting over 10 years. I'll pull the pan if I have to but trying to avoid removing the pan.

Re: Oil pan sludge
yup - easy to do on a model A compared to a modern.
drain it, drop it, drop it again to knock out the baffle, clean it till you can eat off it, snap baffle back in after checking for pitting in dipper tray, not a bad time to check bearign clearances, new gaskets and away you go.

Re: Oil pan sludge
I tried the best way possible, and it can't be done. You must pull the pan and valve cover to clean the sludge. Be sure to drop the pan upside down on the grass to removed the dip tray.

Re: Oil pan sludge
My dad used to drain the oil, put in a gallon of kerosene and run the engine for about 5 minutes. This on an old International PU. Claimed it kept the engine clean, and I imagine it did, but I have never done it and never would. As stated, drop the pan, and check the bearing clearances while you are at it. Put 4x4s under the front tires--the extra height makes things easier.

Re: Oil pan sludge
Sure cant hurt - at minimum drop it and clean the screen and check for scoring. Alot of times the acids that build up over the years break that big spring on the bottom of the pump so check over that spring carefully for pits.

Re: Oil pan sludge
I would not try the kerosene routine. I once did that with a '76 Ford van and it was not too long before a rod bearing went out. The kerosene loosens up all the grit and sludge and it circulates thru all your cylinders and bearings causing a lot of wear. Save your engine -DROP THE PAN AND SIDE VALVE COVER.
