Installation of sway bar on 35 needed
Picked this sway bar up at Hershey, Don P. would like to modify this to fit his car, need information on installation on his 35 Roadster. We have several photos attached of sway bar, any photos of installation on your car/cars is appreciated, thank you.
. . . We know that this was made for springs that paralleled the frame, we need to make a right angle clip and adjustment bolt. (maybe a tie rod end) Attachment information on a 1935 is what we are looking for. . |

Re: Installation of sway bar on 35 needed
Looks like a 40 Ford unit.If you changed the axle, wishbone and perch pins it would connect right up.In my 36 coupe I used a Chassis Engineering unit which was an easy install and works well.

Re: Installation of sway bar on 35 needed
that appears to be the same sway bar that i mounted on my `37 chassis. i believe the original application is `40 & `41. i thought the front cross members from `35 - `40 were the same, but they are not. i modified the cross member with a carbide burr and a die grinder to provide clearance for the sway bar. you are going to need spring perches for a `40 w/sway bar and the swivels that you have attached to the sway bar may be worn out. dennis carpenter has N.O.S. perch bolts and the swivels. i`ll take some photos of my installation on the `37 chassis if you want. i don`t believe you need to modify the sway bar, the perch bolt center to center dimension is important [needs to be the same as `37 -`41]. the addition of the sway bar made a huge difference in the way my truck handles.

Re: Installation of sway bar on 35 needed
What you have is a '40 Deluxe-'41 sway bar. I also have this same bar mounted on my '35 coupe. It does dramatically reduce body roll on cornering and cross winds. Unfortunately, it is not a simple bolt on addition.
If you use this bar with your '35 wishbone you need to bend in the ends of the sway bar inward to align with the axle pins. If you are using a '37-'40 wishbone, no problem. Next you will need to replace the '35-'36 axle pins for a '40 Deluxe-'41 pin assembly. Now for the hard part. Axle pins DO NOT like to come out freely. There have been previous posts describing various removal techniques may help. None of them are particularly easy or simple. The replacing axle pins are longer than the original '35-'36 pins. You will need to give each replacing pin additional threads and drill a new cotter pin hole. When done the pin will extend farther below the axle but will bolt up correctly. Mounting the actual bar is relatively simple. You will need to remove one frame rivet (will be replaced with a 5/16" bolt) and drill a 5/16" hole on each side. Bolt the bar on. That's it. Obviously, it takes some effort but in the long run it is worth it. Hope this helps. Tom |

Don-
Check Mac's. I think you will find what you need. The bushing part number is 11A-3558. $3.75 each. Tom Last edited by flatheadfan; 10-19-2013 at 08:19 AM. |

Re: Installation of sway bar on 35 needed
I did that on one of my 37s by just putting the holes in for the bolted brackets and welding a couple of spring hangers to the wishbone. Lot easier than pulling those pins!

Re: Installation of sway bar on 35 needed
I have one already modified. If interested, PM me. Keep that one as is and sell it to a '40 owner.

Re: Installation of sway bar on 35 needed
bruce, here are the images of the `40 sway bar installation on my `37 chassis. i copied the mounting bracket location from my `40 coupe, the bracket nested on one of the rivets in the frame.
