What horn did H. Ford put on the model A?
I looked VIA search and couldn't find this answer here. I have a friend that owns multiple model T's and argues that any original horn would have "Ford" stamped into it. This argument started because I recently bought a brand-new Spartan horn from Snyders and he says that it is a reproduction of something that was never actually on the vehicle. Now my curiosity is up, is Spartan a popular aftermarket horn or is my Spartan a reproduction of the original horn on the car?

Spartans were used. I suggest you buy the Model A Restorations Guidelines & Judging Standards. Money well spent.
Many different types of horn were used.

Thanks for the help, I think I've seen that book but because I'm not making a show car I overlooked it. Maybe in hindsight I should look it up again, show car or not I want mine original!

Exactly. I don't have a show car but I know it is a proper car. It is invaluable for determining what is right or wrong. Good stuff.

Sparton, Ames, FM were some of the horn manufacturors. They all looked basicly the same, and all were motor horns that made the Ahoooga sound. Maybe your friend should stick to model T information.

Some of us Model T people are smarter then that. LOL Oh wait, I work on or around Model A's every day! By the way a Model T horn would not say Ford on it as they were made by out side sources too.

You can have that Model A in any color as long as it's black.
...uh... false.

You have no idea how many times times people have quoted that to me when I'm out in the A. They look very confused when I explain that that was only true in the early days of the Model T, and then in the US. Ts came in a range of colours here. These days, I believe they call it "Fake News"!!

Re: What horn did H. Ford put on the model A?
Forget the title - the book is now being primarily used NOT by 'fine point - blue ribbon judging' (which it does work to serve), but rather the majority of the "Blue Bible" MODEL A RESTORATION GUIDELINES & restoration standards users and readers are actually owners of Ford Model A's that just want to know more about the car and how it was originally constructed.
Now, had you had this excellent book ( a loose-leaf binder ) you could have made a $$$ bet with your Model T friend and armed with true knowledge and factual documentation (which the Restoration Guidelines provides) , you could have won the bet and earned back the money you spent on the purchase of the book (Guidelines). My suggestion to you : buy the book, read through it (and in the process, becoming familiar with the actual facts about the car) and then wait for the next opportunity to win a bed. Besides all the loot you will haul in, it is especially rewarding to learn so many fascinating things about your Model A. And it need not necessarily have to be for car show 'judging' - but it is a powerhouse of information about your car. It really is a great value ! |
