Re: AGM Battery
Except being physically smaller, how are they different from an Optima?
Do they come in 6 volt? |

Re: AGM Battery
I have quit liking Optima several years ago. The first batch I used seem to last forever on the ranch in tractors and pickups. But that was 30 or more years ago. I quit them about 20 years ago cus they seem to have gone down in the longevity department. Oh and I am 12 volt.

Re: AGM Battery
Have you read up on the differences between deep draw batteries and starter batteries? There is a reason they make 2 different kinds. They are different internally.

Re: AGM Battery
Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) batteries have been in the Marine industry for a number of years and have been well accepted. They generally have low internal resistance which gives high cranking amps. They do have, however, have unique characteristics. They don't like being over charged; they'll out gas and won't hold a charge. AGM's also can be damaged if the are deeply discharged. They can be brought back with a high current jolt, but generally not by standard alternators or generators. As a tech from Balmar (high output alternators; 150-250amps) told me, "They're like swimming pools. They'll take all the current you throw at them".

Re: AGM Battery
Just looked at Summit for a Optima battery and it appears they took about a 25% increase in price!

Re: AGM Battery
I agree the Odysey is one of the best. Stay up forever and recharge quickly. Very powerful weight ratio. However, they are NOT cheap.

Re: AGM Battery
As I said I use the aviation version of the PC 680 in my plane. It has same cranking amp at the PC680. The engine in the plane is 6 cylinder opposed piston (like a Corvair) 470 cubic inches. Really works well So time to build a battery box for the 32.

Re: AGM Battery
In my '41 Pickup I decided to put the battery under the passenger seat. I went through an Odyssey and Braille 12 volt batteries. They both did not hold up and were shot in no time. What a waste of money. I then went with an Optima red top and it has been fine for three years.

Re: AGM Battery
I have had an Odyssey battery in my 32 for the last six years without issue.
Great battery. |

Re: AGM Battery
I used to be a sales engineer for Douglas Battery, before they were acquired by East Penn/Deka. On the XS Power AGM, you'd have to go by either folks with experience with that item or any critical reviews you can find.
I've got Optimas in 3 of the 6 vehicles here. Optima has gone through several owners (Gates-Gylling-Johnson Controls), and with each acquisition they have suffered not only management but manufacturing changes. Summary- sometimes you get a good battery and sometimes not a good battery. Beside the other things they don't like that have already been mentioned, they don't care to be left idle.... not even if not hooked up. The last one I had that sat for 5 years could not be resuscitated, no matter the technique. (I have seen them go longer than that and still be ok) |

Re: AGM Battery
Another vote for the Odyssey. I have had one for years that I use for my high compression 350 Chevy engine and a tractor.Charges fast, even when completely dead.
