Default What Grandpa or Farmer Brown used to do..

For some reason my 36 pickup has wide fives on the back and '35 spoked wheels on the front. I took off the hubcap to get to the spindle nut:

Yep, a good ol'fashioned bent nail instead of a cotter pin.

And another wheel apparently they lost the spindle nut and washer so they just put a huge nylock nut on there, no washer.

Be thankful they didn't WELD the nuts on . Had that surprise once . Lotsa junk parts on that 34 . Coulda been the poster child for showing that some should not be allowed to have welders .

no, most true ford mechanics used bailing wire or wire from the closest fence

I've been calling baling wire "Ford parts" for at least 50 years.

The nail is okay in my book (basically its a bendable pin to elimanate movement), but the nylock nut... I dont know. Nylock nuts are ment to seal the first time, not so good the next time.

I drove a truck for a guy in the '50's who had a '57 Mercury wagon and he couldn't keep the axles from slicing out of the wheel bearings, so he had them welded in. It never gave him any more trouble!

You gotta find OLD roofing nails, back storage room at a small town hardware or such. The Harbor Freight Chinese ones have plating that is TOTALLY incorrect for show judging.

Sounds familiar - the 34 with the welded nuts was indeed operational . A mess but operational . On my old John Deeres you see this kinda stuff fairly regularly but they only go 6 mph if you put the spurs to em . Car is a different story & that is why the welded spindle nuts was kinda surprising . Yes I drove it around a bit before I found the welded nuts . That car ended up digested for parts . [1975] . The parts that weren't used for welder testing anyway . The front crossmember was pretty entertaining also - probably had more $'s worth of welding rod on it than a NOS one would have cost .

Early V-8 Club needs to add a "Farmer" or "Great Depression" class for judging...

"Hey! My '32 earned an "Tom Joad" at the Nationals!" It only took second in "Best electrical fire", though. Maybe next year..."

My car sat through the entire jalopy-rama with a flat tire!

Hey, with the price of cotter pins you gotta give credit to the improvisers.

Yeah...some of the Model A frequently used to have a "worst in show" award that was eagerly pursued with stiff competition. Everyone who had an unrestored car would load it up with washtubs and kerosene lanterns and play Okie.
