That customized 1940 Lincoln Continental (previous post) has cut down doors, very similar in style to this customized 1939 Mercury Roadster built by Coachcraft. It has been updated with a 1940 Mercury Grille and Tail Lights. The difference between the Lincoln Continental and this Mercury is that the Mercury doesn't have opening doors. This fine example, that is all Flathead powered resides in California. Earlier this year, I was fortunate to be taken for a ride in this survivor.

Speaking of modified Mercurys , this started out as a '40 Merc. 4 dr. convertible.
Worked on it where I was employed in the early 50's. when it was doing the show circuit in the North east.
Known as the 'Maratta Mystery' or the 'Pink Beast'.
People either loved it or hated it.
By today's standards it is probably considered a waste but back then these were $50-$100 cars.

Here is an enlarged picture of 'Maratta Mystery' or the 'Pink Beast'.
Not my "cup of tea".

Bigger (as in the size of the photo) is not better in this instance...

Interestingly, the car is featured in "butt-ugly pinky-purple", while the shop surroundings are an early-on black and white "grunge"! DD

That's because I took the picture back in the 50's using 35mm black and white film.
The coloring was done digitally (much) later.

The 'Pink beast' was the last version before it was destroyed in about 1960.
This is one of it's several earlier versions.

Wouldn't mind having it in it's original form.

Amen to that! The '40 Merc Convertible Sedan is a rare one. There is a beautiful one at Don Garlits Museum in Ocala, Florida.

How can anyone improve the looks of this car? Absolutely a beautiful classic. What were they thinking when they took one of these beauties and made it look like the above monstrosity?

As was said previously, when that was done to a car like that, they were worth as much as a Yugo is today....... I remember the Merc CS at the Garlits Museum.... Beautiful car!!...... Mark
