air cleaner help [pics inside]
i am in final assembly phase of a rebuild of an 81A block and i want to use the heavy duty air cleaner[pictured]. i am unsure about the mounting hardware, were there coupling nuts used to space the mounting bracket away from the head? does anyone have any practical experience mounting this type of air cleaner?
thanx, tom |

hotcoupe-
I could be wrong but I believe what you have is a '34-early '35 optional "dusty conditions" filter. The air cleaner sits directly on the head. Enclosed is a picture of the same cleaner as yours on my '35. Tom |

thanx for the response. the problem i`m having is the mounting bracket on the air cleaner [ where the three holes are] is interfering with the water outlet on the head. i understand that this air cleaner was designed for use on a twenty one stud motor, but i didn`t think the water outlets on the two types of heads were that different. tom |

Tom-
Other than the "curiosity factor" it invites from on-lookers at shows, the filter itself leaves a lot to be desired. It is difficult to service the carb, requires a richer idle and is sloppy to change or inspect the oil. Those and other quirks probably explains why Ford changed the oil filter design in late '35 to a more compact form. Tom |

Re: air cleaner help [pics inside]
Tom , if that filter was designed for the earlier engines, the water pump and outlet was on the front of the head and not the center of the head as you are trying to use it. Don't think it will work with those heads. Ed

Re: air cleaner help [pics inside]
An air cleaner similar to yours was used on 1939 pickups or dusty conditions. I have only seen pictures of them. Don't know of any details .

Re: air cleaner help [pics inside]
As of a couple years ago Dennis Carpenter was still selling NOS heavy duty air cleaners correct for the center water outlet head engines. They may still have some.

Re: air cleaner help [pics inside]
The later version can be spotted easily because the tube over to carb is made of 2 stampings forming a sort of flattened oval rather than round tube.

Re: air cleaner help [pics inside]
I had one and decided after looking it over and the bulky size etc. I took it to Hershey and it went down the road cheap for what it was and complete. jm2cw
