Default Key Taper Direction

In my last question, the direction of the key tapper became a topic. I went through my collection of Ford books and found this in the 1925 Ford Service Manual.

"639 The hub key is then inserted into keyway on axle shaft as shown at "B' and is forced into keyway by tapping it with a small ham- mer. When installing hub key the tapered end of the key should point toward axle housing as shown at "B"."

Just an observation, when the hub is pushed on, the key would slide forward tightening to the top and bottom of axel and hub and when pulled off the key slides backwards releasing the contact area.

In my case, since the key was stuck in the axel it would not slide and loosen when attempting to pull the hub.

Default Re: Key Tapper Direction

I almost asked what a "key tapper" was and now see what the question was. Yes the taper goes toward the banjo or inside and down toward the axle because of the end of the keyway.

My grandmother had the gift of spelling, somehow I missed out.
