1st model T project
My Dad just picked up this 27 T last week. We have restored some cars before, but never a T. Pretty neat story to the car. Was parked in barn from 1963 until a a few years ago. Guy died, wife sold the car to her local service garage. Service garage owner parked it in his garage for a few years and then sold it. Car is very solid, very little rust, especially considering it lived in New England. All the fenders are pretty banged up. Engine turns over by hand. Engine serial number matches frame. Not sure what our plans are, we at least want to get it running and driving. Im sure we'll have lots of questions !

Get it running and safe to drive. And I would drive it like that. I would not change much of anything. A few hours with a buffet could have it looking pretty good I bet.

Get it running and you can drive it to a few hours at a buffet. I like Chinese.
Welcome to the affliction. Here are a couple of links for all the new T guys. http://dauntlessgeezer.com/DG80.html http://dauntlessgeezer.com/DG79.html |

To some folks that car would be worth more the way it is than if it was restored. There is becoming a lot more appreciation for unrestored cars. Like Steve says. Get it running and safe and enjoy it if that appeals to you.

You have a great find there. You will get mountains of attention as a unrestored survivor.
Don't even wash it. Just make it safe to drive. Remember, you can always restore it but you can never unrestored it. |

Re: 1st model T project
Thanks guys ! One of the things we talked about was upgrading the brakes. We both live is the city, and drivers arent too forgiving around here.

Re: 1st model T project
Mechanical brakes work fine with a little car like that. It don't take much to stop those little cars going that slow. I would get it all mechanically sound and try it out. I would not put much Into the car it don't need.

You really need to study the brake system and ride with someone who has some time in a model T. The Model T doesnt have brakes like we know it. The rear brakes are a parking brake only and even then may or may not work very well. ( And only then when the drive shaft etc stays intact !!) The T brakes are in the transmission with a brake band and work very well stopping the car with engine load , foot pressure etc. You need to approach a T as a car without any brakes and think that all the time you are driving it. When going down the road plan every action way before even beginning to execute it. At 30 mph to stop you do it in stages. step one is to get the throttle closed by lifting up on the throttle ( phase one slow down), then as the car slows left pedal to the neutral position with a slight low band apply ( step two for slow down) then as the car has slowed down apply the middle petal ( Brake Band) and roll to a complete stop. Cant use the brake band all the time as it will overheat the oil, the transmission and the engine ( all running in the same oil). I am a believer in kevlar bands if for no other reason they last forever.... Panic stop= off the throttle , apply brake band, low band and step on the reverse petal and hope you make it. And remember to never rev one up in reverse, cant stop or steer !!! |

Re: 1st model T project
I would get it running and see what it needs. If it needs anything it will be a total mechanical overhaul, but don't restore it yet, just make it a good reliable driver and when it needs it, then redo the body. The middle pedal is not the brake, as stated above; probably a brain fart on Bubba's part; the middle pedal is reverse, brake is on the right.
