Engine Stand Question

Hello everyone

I am going to be pulling out my engine to clean up and repaint and I was wondering if an everyday engine stand will work fine?

I think you can get three of the four arms connected to the flywheel housing if the flywheel is removed. Or, ...you can just paint it while it is hanging from the rafters on the come-along suspended in mid air!

You can get all four points mounted if you remove the flywheel housing too. Never felt safe try to mount to the Fly wheel housing as its too much wieght for the design and may warp it. You can also mount it sideways if you can fab a mount up or but one.

Reminds me of "Sea biscuit" with the AA and his engine contraption. What ever happened to him?

Sea Slug wasn't it? He was from Chicago area as I remember.

It is amazing that he did not get killed with that system of 1 by 6s and other wood.

I would buy or make the side mount for the Model A engine. I made this one and didn't intend to have it in use when I painted the block, but I lent it out once and it came back full of green paint. The 3 small spots under the mount can easily be touched up when the mount is removed. As Brent said, painting it while hanging from a chain isn't a bad idea also.

I used a everyday engine stand with all four bolts, with out the flywheel and it work fine. Should be good to go Pete.

Here's what I use for painting the engine. It is made out of a couple of scrap pieces of 2x12 and some 1/2" plywood. I just mounted the motor box to a dollie for ease of movement. The only part you cann't paint Ford Green is the bottom front of the flywheel housing. I did my engine assembly using a standard engine stand. Obviously, the oil pan is painted before placing the engine in the box. You can paint the block and do all the add-on assembly while it's sitting in this box. Then just hoist it up and drop it in.

He got a scholarship, went to college and probably designs Nuclear reactors or space ships!

Sea slug had the engine running in the last post I saw. I wonder how he's coming on the truck? As can be seen by the front fenders, unfortunately the truck had sat so long in the field it was pretty far deteriorated, so sea slug had his work cut out for him.

I should say that 45 years ago as a kid I ran a chain over a rafter in the garage and used a rope block and tackle, with a ratchet lock (with four ropes going to the pulleys).

I pulled on the rope until my feet lifted off the ground ... My 130 lbs could not lift the engine and transmission. If I jumped around while hanging on the rope I could sometimes get the engine to lift if I did it right after a large dinner.

My brother thought that was very funny for some reason!

Sometimes I had to call my brother for additional help with the rope!

I still have that block and tackle ... but would never use it again as the rope is now over 50 years old! The 2 ton chain fall works so much better!

I used a kids swing set one time. The engine didn't move but the swing sure got a lot shorter in the middle.
