Default 1928 - Original wheel sizes

The more I learn - the more I see how much has been changed on my A.

Couple of questions please.

in 1928 on a standard Model A what size wheels would it have left the factory?

My radiator is open to the elements - would all cars have had a stonechip grille over the rads

There was one size of wheel that left the factory...it was a 21 inch wheel. BUT HOLD ON...there were also two types of 21 inch wheels.

The first type was used from start of production through March 1928 and phased out completely by August 1928...for which the second style became available.

The later 28-29 wheel had a redesigned center hub, including a deeper hub flange, which was increased from 1-3/16 inch to 1-3/8 inch.

This is according to the MARC/MAFCA Restoration Guidelines and Judging Standards WHICH...IF YOU DO NOT HAVE...is going to be a MUST for you if you want to learn about the right components for your car.

Also about the early '28 wheels: the back-flange of the "brake-drum cover" is fabricated differently and does NOT fit later '28-'31 drums.

The early '28 wheels only go with cars with the emergency brake handle on the left, operating on all four wheels.

Get the restoration and judging standards you will be amazed at all the things big and little that are different between months and years of our little cars. Some think it's fun and some think it's a waste of time but the restoration book will have all the nationally recognized changes.

The Judging Standards are a very helpful resource for determining original features for a given Model A... well worth the investment, in my opinion.

In answer to your second question, "A's" did not leave the factory with stonechip grilles (Stoneguards here). They're what you might call a Marmite accessory... love them or hate them. I will say that my car's never had one, and its very rare to fine a period photo of one in use. (I like Marmite but I prefer my "A's" without stoneguards.)

The "Service Bulletins" have a page on the 21" wheels, describing where and how to tell the wheels apart, and how not to mix and match them with the right drums. This can create an unsafe condition.....
