The issue isn't the post office is afraid of counterfeit money orders; they can verify the validity on the spot. What is more likely is that smaller post offices do not carry the amount of cash in their drawers necessary to cover high dollar money orders.

The 3 times I tried, was for amounts, under $100. I believe one of them was for $25-30. The excuse was as you stated, no money in his draw. That was before you could use bank cards and most of their business was cash!

If you use a personal check, the issuing bank HAS to cover it, if there are funds. PO, not so much
