Default strange noise follow up

Nut holding fan was loose, still had cotter key. tightened nut and replaced key, drove about 10 miles and checked nut it was loose again. Retightened nut and added washer as castle nut went on so far that it did not line up with hole for cotter key. The previous owner put on a new water pump and I thought he had not tightened the nut, but it gets loose even with cotter key. Whats going on?

If you have a later "aluminum" replacement fan, some Model A owners reported some time ago that the early "aluminum" fans did not have the proper taper to fit the shaft; however, after tightening several times, the fan would stay tight.

Later "aluminum" fans had proper taper.

Is yours "aluminum"? A magnet will tell if steel or not.

Its a steel 4 blade fan. I was thinking that if its not the wrong taper could the inside tapered part of the fan have split.

Hi Grid,

I would not hesitate one second to buy a new (2) blade aluminum fan after considering the damage it could do to a person, the radiator, hood, & whatever.

Lots of very sad Model A stories on what happens when "cracked" or damaged Model A fans turn loose -- very costly to repair damage or provide replacement radiators, hoods, or what ever -- not to mention lost of an eye or two.

Hope this helps to make a decision.

I agree, take the fan and water pump off and see what's wrong before you loose a radiator or hood, or both. I'd buy the new aluminum two blade fan.

Didn't some replacement water pump shafts have a wrong taper also? Check everything, assume nothing! Good luck and be safe.

I have the same problem WITH the 2-blade aluminum fan purchased in the last 18 months (after having the original 2-blade steel split - missed the radiator, but dented the hood from the inside, cracking the paint)...

A clanking noise, discovered fan wobbled, tightened nut, was OK for a short while, then nut was loose again. Also put on a washer to allow castle to be pinned, came loose again...

Friend thought that perhaps the woodruff key was not correctly seated when the fan was installed. Over time, it worked it's way in place (or further out of place?) allowing the wobble.

He suggested to me to buy a new fan because the wobble at speed probably chewed up the inside of the fan - doesn't thing the shaft is affected because it's hardened steel - with the steel trumping the aluminum...

Just got the new fan, but haven't gotten to install yet...

FWIW
