Default What is the stock 6 volt bulb number for the 1930-1931 dash light?

I saw a post here a while back that lead me to believe that #63 was the stock dash bulb with 3 CP, but I'd like to confirm the bulb number. I also saw a post here about a #81 with 6 CP.

Bratton's and Snyder's don't seem to offer either at the moment. Snyder's offers an 18 CP LED, but I'm wondering if that is so bright it would make it difficult to drive at night.

What is the stock 6 volt bulb number for the 1930-1931 dash light?

Also, can anyone relay their experience of using the Snyder's LED bulb in their dash?

I put a red LED one off ebay in mine. Red does not effect your night vision.

I have an LED bulb in my 30 dash and love it. The 3CP bulb would get so hot the light switch was almost too hot to touch. Led runs super cool and the light is adequate but not so bright as to be distracting. The one I use is smaller than Snyders. I got it from an LED manufacturer but can't remember which one

Yes, #63 is stock 6v, 3 cp incandescent bulb. (All Model A years). Most any auto parts store still sells them.

I have an LED in my dash light. It is bright and does not get hot and takes far less current so it does not drain the battery overnight if I forget to turn it off. By the way, the dash light can be wired into the light switch or ignition switch if using an aftermarket ignition switch.

Can the dash light bulb be changed without dismantling the dash?

No major disassembly required.

If you have the oval speedometer, the light cover pulls off straight toward you to expose the bulb. Replace the bulb and slip the cover back on. You will have to fiddle with the cover to get it on and rotate it a bit to the right to turn the light on, then rotate back to turn it off.

If you have the round speedometer, the bulb is up in a light holder below the windshield (which has a little lever that you push/pull to turn on/off). If you don't know about that lever switch, your bulb my be good and you are just not turning it on.

Although you can reach up in there and replace the bulb in the holder, I find it easier to remove the one center screw and drop the lamp holder. Replace the bulb and reinstall with that one screw.

Hope that helps.

I have the round speedometer. So, it looks like I can remove that one center screw. The switch stopped working a couple of weeks ago, and I’m hoping it’s just a burned out bulb and not a bad unit.

My car didn’t come with a dash light when I bought it several years ago, and I remembered having to hassle with the dash to get the repro installed. I had forgotten about the center screw. Thanks for the response.

Thanks, Jim. I was able to swap the bulb easily.
