Default Rear axle housing question.

Rear axle housings are cast irin correct, supposedly a good grade of cast iron. Reason I ask is I have a couple that for some reason have pads welded to top of the housings that I would like to remove.I don't know if they were for parallel leaf springs or some used for a trailor or worse yet traction bars.they are caps that are radioused to the housings and curved not flat on top.Looks like weld not brazed or cast iron stick.Other than these things welded on they look like new.

The axle housings are not cast iron. They are fabricated from sheet steel, making welding to them much easier than if they were cast iron. If the housings are OK in all other espects, I'd be happy to cut off the added spring mounts and use them. I don't think I'd use an oxy torch, rather an angle grinder.

$9 Harbor Freight 4-1/2" grinder should take care of those.

Maybe opt for the slightly more expensive model.

The center section is cast, the axle housings are not.

Yes, cast steel, not cast iron. Same with the spider gear carrier inside it.
