Default Hydro static fuel gauge system

I have successfully fixed several of these including a 32, 34 trk and a Packard. I was able to clean the gauge tube and unstop the line attached to it on all and I used Mack's gauge fluid with them. It seemed to last only about a year. I made a tool out of an old gauge piece by soldering a tire valve to it and blow out the air lines with a hand pump. Presently working on a 34 car and have the line to the tank run and started on the gauge. Turns out none of the gauges I have contain the gauge wire and all seem to be really stopped up. I have a new repair kit that does not have a gauge wire. Question is, what happens with no gauge wire, erratic action, high or low readings or what? How does that wire work? Next problem would be how to remove the hex assy. the glass tube is tied to, there is a U shaped clamp around it, how have you all removed it and put the new one from a kit back in? I have lost one of the ferules that came with the line kit, anyone have a source for them other than an entire tube kit?
