For what its worth and without debating NOS vs. "modern" rings ....
Per Ford Manual .... The 85 HP V8 was the change from 3-ring to 4-ring pistons and as noted above, production engines did not use expanders behind the rings .... For those with the 3-ring pistons, service sets used expanders on No. 2 and No. 3, and No. 3 oil ring was a 3-piece steel and cast iron assembly. For 4-ring pistons, service sets used expanders with the No. 2 compression and No. 3 oil ring .... but particular sets in this group were to be selected pending the specific work performed or not performed on the cylinder walls. The No. 4 oil control ring was one-piece. Testing of ring-fit varied slightly between pistons marked Canadian and U.S.A.

Are modern rings still cast iron? I hear the term 'chrome moly rings'

So chaps, you are hand on heart telling me that with usage of no more than 50 miles per year this guy is going to actually see a difference in his lifetime between fitting modem rings or NOS ford rings? Electronic ignition is a must as the thing is almost impossible to access in a carrier.
If you really want to worry he has supplied a 1940s NOS gasket set too, complete with old copper head gaskets. Now if it were mine I would definitely fit modern composite as I did on the 24 stud in my carrier.

GB SISSON: Don't know but cast iron rings I would doubt. Seen it said that chrome rings need careful and complete honing to brake-in. Used chrome in '57 on a '51 Merc rebuild and broke in okay .... kids' luck probably.

What they are expressing is: 1. New ring technology is better than old ring technology. 2. They prefer the new ring technology because it is better. You are building an armored personnel carrier or Bren Gun Carrier, correct? It weighs what, 5000+ Lbs and came with 85HP. No one here would notice the difference in performance by the seat of the pants. Fifty miles a year is 500 miles per decade so if this guy lives another 100 years he'll have 5000 miles on your rebuild. I'm guessing he won't notice but that is just my opinion.

Both chrome and moly is a facing put on a steel ring.
Chrome is great for hightemp highpressure turbodiesels.
Still no clue if this engine has a fresh bore or if its a re-ring job.
Sticking moly rings in a re-ring overhaul...i would just use the supplied cast rings and not worry about it.
The difference in power and lifespan of the engine won´t matter in this case.
