Rear Spring Perch - Welds
I have the rear end out of my '29 to install an overdrive and am trying to understand what I see with regard to the spring perches. In reading prior threads I understand it may have been common to weld and re-drill the perches. Is that what the attached picture looks like to you all?

Re: Rear Spring Perch - Welds
seems the heat stresses would weaken the part versus strengthen it.

MIG is my welding of favor. MUCH more inclusive weld and no inclusions from the shield material/substance. Many use TIG for the first pass to get the most inclusive weld possible. With proper pre-heat, checking as you go along with dye penetrant, and proper interpass temperature there should be NO cracking. Actually with 7018 filler/rod, your weld will be stronger than the original metal. I think a "re-do" is warranted though. A lot rides on that support. Joe K

Re: Rear Spring Perch - Welds
A local Model A repair shop here in Southern California repairs worn spring perches by inserting a bronze rod the same size as the bushing and then filling in the worn void with weld. The weld won't attach to the bronze.

I sorta do the same thing but use gouging rods made of carbon. That way if anything gets stuck I can break it out I think they are 3/4 (maybe 7/8) and I get them from McMaster Carr But be awhile since I bought any. |

Copper rod it good too if you can find some. I've used copper for weld back ups quite a few times. I avoid using too hard a filler material. It makes it more brittle than it was originally.
