Pack front hubs with grease?
I'm working on the brakes on this survivor '40 Fordor. The front brake hoses were so bad they were solid, no visible passage for fluid. The steel lines are OK now that they've been blown out. New grease seals all around, front shoes good, rears covered in grease, to be replaced. Now to my question: the front hubs were filled with grease between the bearings and the bearings are fine. I cleaned out the old grease in the space between the inner and outer bearings. Should I pack that void with new grease? Thanks for the continuing help on this great old car.

Re: Pack front hubs with grease?
Yes. You do need to pack the front bearings with grease.

" the front hubs were filled with grease between the bearings and the bearings are fine." - The grease worked, didn't it....

Re: Pack front hubs with grease?
No need to waste that much grease, as long as the bearings are PROPERLY packed with appropriate grease PLUS a smidge. DD

Re: Pack front hubs with grease?
I want to be sure I understand what you are saying. The original post asked "Now to my question: the front hubs were filled with grease between the bearings and the bearings are fine. I cleaned out the old grease in the space between the inner and outer bearings. Should I pack that void with new grease?" Packing this area would take about a pint of grease. I have never done this and don't think it should be done. Are you trying to say that the hollow area in the center of the front hub between the inner and outer bearings should be filled with grease?

Re: Pack front hubs with grease?
Charlie, V8 and everyone, yes it's the void between the bearings (8 ounces' worth?) that was filled with grease. The young guy (just turned 81) helping me confirmed what you all have said. Pack them well plus a bit and they'll be OK. Thanks everyone!

Re: Pack front hubs with grease?
In the late 50's at the Gulf station. Mr. Jernigan told me the correct way was to pack it full!
That however is not needed. Took several years and buying my own grease to change my mind. |

Re: Pack front hubs with grease?
Use a grease like Sta-Lube SL3131 Drum Brake grease. High temp grease will break down and make a mess of the bearings. JMHO. LouB.

Re: Pack front hubs with grease?
definitely use SL3131 in rear bearings--remember they are not greased by the rear axle lube!! Sta-Lube is now part of CRC and it can be purchased at Napa stores

Re: Pack front hubs with grease?
Check out the Sta-lube prices on Amazon.com. I buy my Sta-Lube GL-4 85w-90 and 140w for my Tranny, OD and Banjo there and get free shipping.

Yes, bought the SL3131 on Amazon. I used 85w-90 in the banjo and plan to use Mac's 600w in the tranny.

Re: Pack front hubs with grease?
If you removed all traces of the old grease with a liquid cleaner, I suggest you do put some grease in the center of the hub and work it into all the crevices. This will prevent rust from forming.

Re: Pack front hubs with grease?
I've never heard of this in automobile bearings but it's interesting reading.

Re: Pack front hubs with grease?
Why? It is not intended for a V8 era transmission. Even Mac's tells you Ford Model T (1909 - 1927). It is for straight cut gears, the V8 transmission does not have straight cut gears. Why not use a proper gear lube in the transmission as called out by Ford?
