Do-Ray fog lights
Hello everyone,
Just a short question: Does anyone have any information about Do-Ray fog lights. I purchased 2 for my 29 ford speedster. I would like to rebuild them. Any info would be appreciated. Jim m |

Re: Do-Ray fog lights
What kind of info are you looking for? What model of Do-Ray are they? Seal-beam or
"glass-seal" as they were first called? 1940 is when glass-seal's were first introduced. Separate bulb, lens, & reflector? Yellow lenses did not come out until 1936. I'm no expert, but I have been collecting auxiliary (fog, road, driving) lights for a while. Bob-A |

I've got a Do-Ray catalog stashed some where. I'll dig it out and see what it says. From what I remember I believe the -1000- model is one of their 'top-of-the-line' lamps. Are the lenses Do-Ray marked? Bob-A |

Yes they are. Stainless steel cover and one wire coming out the back. The bulb inside seems to turn as a unit. It is not a sealed beam.

I found my Do-Ray catalog and from what I can tell it is from 1941. It says the Do-Ray 1000 is "A 'Grand' foglite" and "The Thorobred of the Highway". The body is chrome plated and the 'door' (lens retainer) is stainless steel. It uses a 32 cp prefocused bulb. With the 7" amber lens it retailed for $8.00. The words: foglite, thorobred & glaseal are the spellings used in the catalog. Bob-A |

You can get repop prefocused bulbs from vendors I'm sure. Sometimes you might run across a parts stash at a swap meet or eBay. A good silver smith may be able to repair any dents or dings on the body shells. Plus, they can replate the reflector too if it needs it. There are many chrome shops out there. But, finding one that can do a good job: polish and plating can be hard. Cracks in the rims and the bodies are a different level of restoration. And I don't know of anybody who does it. Some day with a few junk shells I have. I may try filling in cracks with silver soldier. However, metallurgy is not one of my strong points. The best way to start is with NOS. Twelve, fifiteen years ago on the ..'Bay. You could find pairs of NOS fog lites for $50. Now, a NOS pair will go for $150 or more. Especially if they are high-end, quality lights. Bob-A |
