1946 Mercury Wiper Motor Trico
Just purchased a Trico Wiper Motor, however it did not operate. Opened it up and looks like a rebuild is in order. Nice and clean on outside!
Who to contact for spares, rebuild kit for these wiper motors. !946/1947 Trico 51A 17508C Thanks, Phil NZ |

Phil, try lubing it up, the grease tends to dry up, particularly when these things sit unused for a number of years.

I have had little success cleaning and lubricating NOS wiper motors. I have had Kent Jacquith in Oregon rebuild these for me and they always work great! He should be in the EV8 Club registry.......40larry |

Re: 1946 Mercury Wiper Motor Trico
Think I'm needing to go with the 41 Wiper motor as these NZ models still sport the 41 Dash layout. Just want one with the 2 connections, air supply and park mode.
Using original wiper switch which has adjustable speed function. Phil NZ |

Re: 1946 Mercury Wiper Motor Trico
Phil I've never had a "pro" rebuild one of these for me, they are real simple and you should be able to get it going. I've done a number of these. Dismantle it, wash it out in thinners and reassemble in reverse. I relubed the paddle with Vasilene.
the 41 wiper motor will be correct if your car is a 46 or 47 with the small wiper bezels. The motor attaches to a U shaped bracket under the dash and the pivot arms attach to the motor direct. Correct motor is an SSR 1-4 Later 47/48 used a larger bezel and had a different arm piviot assembly under the dash. The pivot arms are attached to a frame that holds the motor. You can't use the 41 motor as they park the wipers up side of the centre divider of the windshield. I've got a 41 motor in mine and thats what it does. If you can't get it to work check your vacuum hoses are around the right way. by "bezel" I mean the chromed piece that goes around the splined shaft the wiper arms snaps on to. GB

The wiper arm towers greatly benefit from a bit of oil.

The fat hose from the port on the manifold goes to the "fat nipple" at the base of the switch. The other " fat nipple" on the switch goes to the fat port on the wiper motor. The narrow hose hose can only go on the remaining ports between the switch and the motor. I had to move the fat hoses around when i first tried to get my one to operate...trial and error. One other thing ...there is a little spring inside that little tin side cover. you might want to gently take that off and see it is not broken or has become detached. Be careful though as you don't want the spring to "ping off" into "outer space". GB
