I have the insolated firewall , lots of insolation in the floor . I checked my inside temps on a trip @ 100* outside ... my seat area was @ 95* but my floor was 115* . tires were 105* rear end was 150* . the inside heat wears me out ............ thanks .. steve

Re: floor board heat
I use 1/4 thick crematory insulation. Have it stapled to the engine side of the toe board and the underneath of the floor board on my 30 Tudor. Works well.

Re: floor board heat
Some guys like a muffler shield, you can buy them from Leslie Pam or make one yourself quite inexpensively: search the archives for posts on that, there are a few really good ideas out there. I wrapped my muffler and piping with that tape hot rodders use, and made a shield of stove pipe and it makes a big difference in heat and noise. Another idea I have seen was a 1/8th inch thick piece of aluminum bolted to the frame which extended over the muffler as a shield. A combination of wrapping, a shield and the insulation Bob referred to under the floor boards would probably work really well. I have been looking for an insulation to use under the floor. Maybe Bob can post a pic of it, a description or the source.
Of course, as soon as winter arrives, we'll all be asking how to heat the car :-) |

Re: floor board heat
I've noticed while driving my car, if I have the front two windows rolled down, but the back windows up, it'll create a vacuum and bring the heat up through the floor boards. If I crack the back windows, the vacuum goes away. Of course, it's usually best when I have everything rolled up with the AC on

Re: floor board heat
I use one of those muffler heat shields, available from most parts suppliers.

Re: floor board heat
The heat shield made by Leslie Pam is a very good quality product. I believe he calls it Kool Feet. Don't waste your money, like I did, on a cheaper one they will break. I've had mine on for many years and they are great. Read his web site about his test results. Very interesting.

Re: floor board heat
Cover the bottom of the floorboards with 22ga. polished aluminum. it will reflect the majority of the radiant heat, and it is thin enough to not cause the board to raise up.

Re: floor board heat
Hi Rock,
Even though used since the 1920's, many never became informed yet in 2013 that aluminum reflects heat energy, & also if used, that an aluminum radiant barrier is totally "useless" unless provided adjacent to an air space. The foil advertised & provided on expensive auto sound deadening material, covered with a dense floor covering material, without an air space is "useless" as a radiant heat barrier. Floor Board Coincidence: This is what I am doing -- working on my Model A floor boards: 1. First, after cleaning, taped aluminum faced Home Depot Duct Tape, to "bottom" side of both floor boards. 2. Second, on the "bottom" side of floor boards, provide thin, 3/16" thick strips of 3/8" wide Luan Plywood tacked on about 6" centers on top of the foil tape to provide an air space between the first & the next aluminum layer. 3. Third, again, on the "bottom" side of floor boards, provide & attach a continuous 0.030" aluminum sheet screwed to the 3/16" tack strips thus allowing an air space on both sides of the 0.030" aluminum sheet, & thus providing high radiant energy reflectance sheet, & lowered heat emission on back side. 4. On metal sides of wood floor boards, (to compensate for raised floor boards), & on in-sides of cowls, & on in-side of firewall, already provided (2) layers of "B-Quiet" aluminum faced sound deadening material, all with the aluminum side facing the interior. 5. On the in-side of the firewall, only at attachment screws, already provided 3/4" x 3/4" wood blocks fastened to the foil sound deadening with double-stick tape, on top of the aluminum foil "B-Quiet", prior to installing a Black Plastic Formed Interior Firewall Insulating Panel sold by Model A vendors. The "B-Quiet" will be facing a 3/4" air space & the dense soft material on the back of the insulating panel will be facing an air space; thus the firewall now has an interior airspace. (Most effective professional sound reduction for all sound wave lengths, (including engine noise), always includes the theory of: "Separate" & "Add Mass). 6. A good example of using double radiant barriers is that a residential attic at noon, on a 100 degree day, with black asphalt shingles can reach a temperature of about 150 degrees maximum at the rood ridge. Two (2) layers of vented aluminum foil adjacent to air spaces provided on top of the solid wood sheathing can easily lower attic heat 55 degrees, i.e., from 150 to 95, plus maintain attic temperatures (5) degrees cooler maximum than outside hot summer temperature. Hope this helps someone to fight the heat. |

Re: floor board heat
Hi V4F,
You are welcome! Others may have other recommended methods, but it appears that the next level of relief & comfort for one's noisy, Model A Hot Air Balloon ride during hot summer days is wearing ear muffs and placing one's feet in a bucket of ice or adding auto air conditioning. |
