Default Running a 6 volt heater fan off 12 volts

Will those ceramic reducers be okay?...I have a few around I'd rather use one up, than start sourcing a 12 volt motor.

Thanks.

if you are talking about the ballast reducers for ign-they will not work too much amperage. I have done a few of these conversions and if you want I will get a list of the required parts.

No. not the ballast resistors, those JC Whitney _and other_ that are about 3 inches in diameter...have a voltage in, and 3 or four taps out.

Have been running my 6 volt heater motor on 12 volts, it just runs faster like the starter motor does.

That is how the speed control works on a lot of heater motors, the switch varies the resistance which changes the motor speed.

Thanks Gent's, I do have several ceramic heater switches...but wow ,,,never thought a 6 volt fan motor would live on 12 volts, I think I'll still wimp out though, and used the big reducer I have.

Thanks

Why not hook up one of the ceramic heater switches and measure the voltage output for different settings. It should only have 12 volts out in a bypass position on the switch. If the other settings have usable voltages, just limit the usage to those positions.

most electric motors have the same bolt pattern, whether its 6 or 12 volts, most parts stores carry the motors, take your 6 volt there and check it against a 12 volt, just make sure it turns the right direction, or if your switch has 3 positions ,run the motor on low setting, it will turn like its on high

Be careful. Some resistors put out a LOT of heat. I tried a 1.35 ohm ballast resistor and my 6V heater motor hardly turned.

The switches I have are off, then two clicks...assume a low and a high.

Thing is, I really don't want the motor running fast all the time, some ti.es I just want heat moving...not blowing.

The heater I have is an older unit that came with a F1 I bought years ago...looks a good period fit for my '42 PU.

Having experience in my '55-9 Chevy PU's, I rarely had the heater motor on high, unless I flipped it up to defrost the windshield...but this heater just has directional vents, no defrost attachments...which is fine, I'll carry a towel

Thanks again all, will check my switch out put tomorrow...might be all I need...main thing I was concerned about was damaging a motor, but seems that isn't a concern...especially if they could live on 12 volts anyways.

I've used one of the big reducers in my 48 for the past decade or more as a daily. Works fine for the 6V heater on 12. I just mounted it on the bottom rail of the metal dash away from anything flammable.

I ran an original 47 ford heater on 12 volts for years and it never went bad. I just did not run it on high. If you turned it on high you could tell it has too much voltage and would not hold up. It realy turned high revolutions on high.
