Default Steering wheel play

So is there a way to test a steering column without disassembling it for excess play?

Sure, fabricate a mount that replicates the holes in the frame yet with the column laying horizontal, and then clamp it in your vise. Use an old worn pitman arm and weld on a 12" extension for additional leverage, ...and use the steering wheel and the modified pitman arm simultaneously to check the backlash/adjustments.

I don't believe there is a short way here. Steering is "important". If your concerned about something, take it apart and check or fix it. Than there will be no question as to what your dealing with.

Be sure, be safe. Enjoy.

Here is a sort of related question. How much of the shaft is taken up by the steering box? I ask because I want to check the shaft length of a rebuilt unit I just picked up, it is a 2 tooth and I am hoping I didn't buy the wrong length for my tube. It was a pretty good deal but I neglected to research this up front. Thanks for any insight.
