Default 312 Y block

Do we have any late 50's Y block experts here? I'm wondering what changed between 1955 - 1960 on the 312 Y block to make the 1959 312 Y block so different that things like Fuel pumps are not interchangeable across years.

Like Carter lists fuel pump M73066 D/A for 1955 - 1957 Mercury Monterey with the 312, and a M3528 S/A for the 1960 Monterey with the 312, but nothing for the 1958 - 1959 Monterey with the 312.

D/A and S/A mean dual action and single action. The dual action was for vehicles that needed the extra vacuum for the wipers. Not quite sure why nothing is listed for the 58/59 Montery with the 312, that would probably be a single action pump as well.

Yeah, my car has the D/A fuel pump on it, even though the wiper motor is electric. The vacuum is blocked off on the fuel pump.

But my fuel pump is kaputz...so I was trying to source a new pump, and i notice that 1959/1960 seem to be an oddball year for 312 parts for some reason.

I'm thinking in 1959 you could get the vacuum or electric wiper motor, but not sure. Maybe electric wiper motor was a buy-up. Still doesn't explain why Carter and other places don't show the 1955-1958 or 1960 pumps as interchangeable with 1959/1960 Montereys. Seems odd unless something in the motor changed in 1959. You would have to know if you needed S/A or D/A pump (depending on the wiper motor on the car).

any single action fuel pump for a y will work.the 59 used 471 heads which lowered comp, a lot.i believe the 59 had a different manifold for drivers side.thats what i heard anyway.

Unless you're wanting to replace your pump with another D/A pump, you can use an FE pump. I'm eliminating vacuum wipers and heater control, so I bought a Carter FE pump.

There have been quality issues with aftermarket fuel pumps. For that reason, Casco is buying American and Mexican-made rebuildable cores for $50.
