Rear Axle removal to inspect gears
If you want to pull out the rear axles and ring gear for inspection which side does it pull out?

Re: Rear Axle removal to inspect gears
Seems to me that would be a lot more work then just pulling the whole rear end. Besides, how are you going to check and reset the preload?

Re: Rear Axle removal to inspect gears
In that case it would be the left side . I always use the drivers side term for our LHD cars because it is less confusing to some .

Re: Rear Axle removal to inspect gears
I understand why some of you do that but I can't for the life of me understand why instructions for the istallation of things do the same. For example, I saw ionstructions on how to install con rods say that the scoop should face the passenger's side. I wonder if someone from over here would be covered by warranty if they did just that. Right and left makes much more sense - it is universal.y understood, surley.

Re: Rear Axle removal to inspect gears
>>SCUTTLE, the WING, the BOOT, the HOOD
I'd say cowl, the mudguard, the boot and the hood. Sort of half and half ... Definition of "scuttle" on the web. "The scuttle panel is most usually the part between windscreen and bonnet, where the windscreen wipers are mounted - in roadsters, the top panel of the dashboard can also have the same name... The panel between the engine compartment and passenger compartment (the vertical panel) is the bulkhead. It's origin in this sense is said to be linked to the "scuttles" on board sailing ships, which were hatches cut in the deck and covered with a "lid" - some say the root is the Old French word "escoutille", which is the origin of "scuttling" a ship - you opened all the hatches, letting the sea in and sinking the ship..." |

I think that the confusion comes in on how to determine which side is left or right . Left or right is determined when sitting in the car . We sit on the left side here to drive the car so drivers side better describes the left . You might be surprised how many body parts get ordered for the wrong side . |

Re: Rear Axle removal to inspect gears
I replaced the right rear axle on my September 29 with the rear end in the car . I removed both hubs and drums . I removed the bolts on the left side of the banjo and removed the left axle housing . I was able to remove both axles and differential out the left side . I didn't disturb or remove the gasket . I put gasket sealer on the old gasket and put it back together . It worked out good , no leaks and is quite as ever . The hardest thing was the placement and setup of the jack stands .

Re: Rear Axle removal to inspect gears
I left everything undisturbed, drained the oil and filled the housing with kerosene as a flush. I then rotated the assembly a dozen times from each side, drained it, and dried it out with a stream of air from a hair dryer directed into the fill hole. Then, with a light shined into the fill hole and a mini-borescope into the drain hole, I was able clearly see the condition of the ring and pinion as the assembly was rotated. A partial view of the axle teeth can also be made as well. Without a borescope, if you cock your head just so from the right side, you can see just the ring and pinion teeth.

Just remember with old Ford Banjo rear ends, and ONLY old Ford rear ends, "Left is right, and right is wrong".
