Default 1954 ford customline brake eccentric remove

Has anyone ever removed the eccentric on the front brakes that adjusts the clearance of secondary shoe? I am putting new lining on and a duel master cylinder and the new shoes do not have the hole for the eccentric spring. I have adjusted these brakes in the past with this 54 only eccentric adjuster and question weather it is necessary. I could drill the hole but if it is not need would rather eliminate the eccentric.

I am not sure what you are talking about when you refer to the eccentric, but if the new shoes are not the same as the old ones, they are probably not the correct ones for the application, and may be a generic "fit all" for that size shoe.

The shoes are right except for this 1 hole that is just below the wheel cylinder plunger on the front brakes secondary shoe.A spring goes from that hole to a hole in the backing plate just below the bearing seal. It pulls the shoe against a eccentric that you can adjust from the back of the backing plate to put the shoe 10 thousands away from the drum by placing a feelers gauge through a slot in the outer edge of the drum. I am pretty sure this was a 54 only .I will try to take a picture of the assembly from my ford shop manual.

The '55 Ford car brake parts are all the same except that in place of the '54 eccentric adjustment, Ford decided to have the primary shoe rest against a large pin located at about the 4:30 position of the backing plate to accomplish the same mission.
Since the '54 backing plates don't have that large pin on them, I suggest you do not remove the eccentric. If you do, you will have dragging brakes regardless of where you adjust the brake shoes.

Here is a better fix to gain some stopping power. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/t...r-a-54.899224/ Part numbers are there too.,no more adjusting by guess and by hand.

Jeff, I looked at this and it applies to the rear only. His dilemma is what to do about the front brakes.
The answer is...go ahead and drill the hole in the web of the brake shoe in the same place as the old shoes and re-use your eccentric adjusting system.

My folks had a new '54 Ford, and my high school car was also a '54. My dad and I did brake work on both, but I do not remember the '54-only front brake secondary shoe eccentric. I have the '52-'54 and supplement '54 manuals, but they do not show the '54 front brake disassembled, only the common rear. I'm sure the brake is Bendix, but a design I've never seen. Does anybody have a blow up or pictures of the brake? The link jeffB2 posted came up "ERROR". Thanks.

I want to see the actual eccentric behind the shoe. Your picture shows the outer assembly.

Thank you for the pictures. The purpose of the secondary shoe eccentric (or later pin) is apparently to keep the brake shoes centered, preventing the secondary from dragging against the drum because of the off center orientation of the assembly, something not normally found with the common Bendix duo-servo brake design. I know I've worked with that brake, but more than 50 years ago!

It is for the front and rear both you will see that in the parts number listings You can convert a '55 too but the parts are not the same.
