Seebees,
My vacuum line is still in place on our truck. It is plugged in the cab. I will try to take some pictures. Also DavidG may have some details too. At this time my windshield wiper is not operational and or in position. But the line runs from the front of the manifold up to the wiper location. We need some pictures of your progress on your truck project!
Regards,
Chris and Cheryl

Seabees,

Chris's vacuum line is the early version for the four-cylinder intake manifold with the vacuum line connection at the front of the manifold, as he indicates. The majority of '32 fours have that connection at the back of the intake manifold. Which is yours?

Seebees,
Pictures coming, I did take them and left my phone in the shop, so they did not transfer to my computer yet. There might be some pictures of the engine in my first pages of this thread.

Check out post #87 about 5 pages into this thread. Pretty good shots of the vacuum line attaching and routing on the 32 "B" engine.

Regards,
Chris and Cheryl

Guys,
Seebee,

I must say I accidentally clicked on "Imgur" picture storage site. And it worked! I believe my internet speed was so slow it just would not let me back in. Our son Adam helped me change to a new wireless system that is currently about 100 times faster!
Regards,
Chris and Cheryl

I read that this manifold with the front vacuum fitting was designed to be used with the experimental vacuum clutch that was never produced. Anybody know anything about that?

Vince has some information on the vacuum clutch on his site.

Bob,
Thanks for the link. A good detailed article. That is interesting on the vacuum clutch! For some reason I am kind of glad that it did not work out! Might have been like vacuum wipers. Not so great under a load. I have another intake manifold, may have to look at that one sometime too.
Regards,
Chris and Cheryl

The first photo below is from Ford's archives showing the installation of the prototype vacuum clutch. Ford went so far with the idea that they sought and were granted a patent on the design, despite not adopting it for production.

All '32 Fords carry a trace of the vacuum clutch design. The second photo is of the last version of numerous versions of the firewall. Have you ever wondered what the purpose was intended for the large clinch (D) nut on the right side(in the photo)? Now you know as its purpose was to attach the vacuum tank for the clutch and the bottom of the tank would have rested on the ledge directly below. That ledge would have served two purposes as the other one was to increase the toe room in the inside of the firewall. On early firewall versions, that possibility is more obvious with a shelf formed by an indentation, with the earliest firewalls having two holes in the indentation for the tank's attachment.

Perhaps the idea was inspired by what took place over at the Lincoln Engineering Department where a vacuum assist for the brake system was developed and put into production with the 1932 models, which had a much earlier Job #1 date than that of Ford production.

Ford Folks,
I had the pleasure of talking with DavidG. today, about some measurements inside a commercial cab. A pleasure to be able to assist him in his Gold Orange truck project too!

We spoke about the cowl design in these trucks that Ford had designed for mounting the vacuum clutch system. Amazing details and a neat 90+ year old story! As usual I feel like I am drinking from a fire hose!

I took some glamour shots of the ragged ol' truck. The weather has not allowed me to get it out lately. It has been sitting in the living room of the shop. I see a small amount of oil dripping out the rear of the pan. Humm? Maybe those new rear seals are not as good as expected??

And one of the first pictures when I went to look at it!

Regards,
Chris and Cheryl

Chris, the 'as found' shot gives me hope they are still out there. What a great find for you and a lot of fun for us, meeting you and your family while watching the progress. Well done!

GB,
Hope things are good on the island! Your going to love your new work shop, and stove for heat!
The truck is for sure an odd commercial vehicle to be saved for 70 years and never had a wrench touch it! Not a 3 window, not a hot rod, not a high end Ford at all! Just a ragged ol' truck! Passing through two family members, and kept in two garages. It's a great story, of the few that do survive.
It has been my pleasure to provide some content to the awesome Ford Barn forum!
Regards,
Chris and Cheryl

Ford Folks,
A look back: When our truck was almost 40 years old Cheryl and I tied the knot! Yea 52 years ago today! Wow! We had hair and ambition back then! I guess this is how our cars get older? Still trying to look forward too! Maybe a new car toy, slightly newer, for us next year! Trying to wrap my head around that one (1965 Merc Comet)! Are we too old for new toys? Should we be dialing back??

Hope things are good in Ford Land!

Regards,
Chris and Cheryl
