1928 transmission case lacking holes for throw out carrier
I've built up the best of a few transmissions and I'm re-assembling one on the bench right now.
Turns out, my best candidate is an early transmission case that lacks the 4 mounting holes for the throw out bearing carrier/snout. I haven't found how the carrier is attached on a 1928, but I'm considering drilling/tapping the case to accept the 4 bolts for the snout that I have. Is the early case valuable/desirable without these holes? I don't want to ruin something rare that could be of use to a meticulous restorer.

That would also be my guess. MultiDisk clutch used a different setup, including bell housing, trans shaft, throwout bearing etc. But I believe the only difference in the transmission housing is that there were no holes tapped that would be needed for the snout.

My multi disc is the same way throw out bearing is mounted to the clutch pack. Personally I wouldn't drill it. It's only original once

Re: 1928 transmission case lacking holes for throw out carrier
There is also a difference in the reverse idle, the head is much larger where it goes in the case and there is a different way the oil is taken to the reverse idle gear on the inside. This feature is unique from the outside, something a Judge would look for if the "A" is in fine point judging.
Just my opinion, Ron I suggest you use a later case to build your transmission, just my opinion |

Re: 1928 transmission case lacking holes for throw out carrier
The center case is also early case as evidenced by the cast bearing retainer instead of the snap ring as on the right. I think the one on the right is the latest case pictured.

Re: 1928 transmission case lacking holes for throw out carrier
I give up !! The shaft on the right is the Early one, The middle one is the 2nd type & the last used the rest of the time.. I think one of the trans boxes has already been drilled for later use.. So you show, One original Early type, big collar, one drilled with big flat bolt hold down plate, and the later style..

Re: 1928 transmission case lacking holes for throw out carrier
#12 shows the cases earliest on the right, then next is the middle, then last is the left. Only the far right is the early one without the threaded holes for the collar.
The reverse idler shafts are shown earliest on the left, then middle is next, and latest is far right. |

Re: 1928 transmission case lacking holes for throw out carrier
With the exception of the very early transmission with the larger hole in the back, do the transmission rebuild kits currently available fit all the transmissions?

Re: 1928 transmission case lacking holes for throw out carrier
Dennis,
Nice pictures showing the three main style transmission cases (in order). There are a couple more different style cases, but the differences are very subtle in nature from the ones shown in you pictures. Thanks, Rusty Nelson |

Re: 1928 transmission case lacking holes for throw out carrier
Info from Judging Standards & 'other' (probably Doc K). Don't remember where i got the pix or would give them credit!
(A7006) TRANSMISSION CASE (Type 1) {J.S.’16-E28}: large hole for transmission reverse idler shaft with a wide collar {J.S.’11}: ● (BOP-m’28): distinguished by a reverse idler gear shaft with a 1-3/8” diameter wide collar visible at left rear of transmission case ● (BOP-Nov’29): 1/4” x 1-7/8”counter shaft & reverse idler shaft retainer at rear of case ● Ford Engine Green {Non-J.S.} (BOP-m’28): Front face: no holes for main drive gear bearing retainer (A-7050) since this case was for the multidisc clutch. The bearing retainers both front and rear were part of the casting. Inside: smooth bosses for cluster gear … countershaft gear thrust washer (A-7119) used at each end |
