Sounds to me that the rods are a little small. Over fifty Years ago, I "re-fit" a set of rods that were about .010 too small. Simular situation to yours. I did not have any money for the correct rods and I had these and a good sharp bearing scraper and a lot of time. The engine ran just fine for several years until I sold the car and went into the Army. I really would not recomend this procedure but in the old days, it was done.

Chris.

What Im Trying To build is a coffe shop motor about 24 mile round trip no long distance plans. # 4 rod journal has a piece of babbit missing in the center no damage to crank journal. I was hoping to put in a gasket set and run. No shims left

If you have babbit missing, that is not good.

How about a picture?

It just depends on how much is missing and how good the rest of it is.

If the rod bearings are really marginal, I think I would want to do something about it while it is apart. If the crank pins are round, you can buy some .010 undersize rods, take a few shims out and that should work fine.

I do not like to take stuff apart after I have just gotten it together.

Just my opinion,

Chris
