Default Is there a safe way?

Is there a safe way to disassemble a transmission tower without a $35 spring compressor? I want to see what would need to be replaced.

Then I could decide whether or not to buy a rebuilt from Snyders for $130 or invest in the parts and the spring compressor for reassembly.

Thanks, Gang!

I think that's $ 35 well spent makes the job easy and safe . I made my own tool worked perfect removing spring . But going back in not so good . But it worked then I found the tool I already purchased 4 years ago .

I scrounged through my scrap tub and found some metal that worked for a homemade tool. With the help of my son, the tower spring came apart and went together easy. Cost $0 dollars.
You may not have to buy anything to rebuild your tower. The detent tracks on the 2 shift rails can be welded and reground. So can the ball that moves the forks. That's what I did anyway. Your results may vary.

I made two different styles that worked just OK, then I saw the one Vince pictured and made one like it. It's the best by far.

Tom can you please tell me the dimensions of the tool you made?
I want to make one. It looks like 3/4" Conduit, how long is the slot opening and width? How far is the washer from the end?
Thanks!

The pipe is from a piece of free exercize equipment I picked up from the curb. I'll have to find it and get back to you with dimensions, but it's just large enough to slip over the spring, and the cut down flat washer is brazed in place at a slant to match the spring coil. Nothing too specific. I cut the bottom at a slant which doesn't show too well in the picture. I put a flat washer on the top of the pipe before I slipped on the hand grip. This way the pipe won't cut through the handgrip when I push down on it.
