Default Roadster windsheld Q...

Ford made the windshield so that it could be 'folded' down on top of fuel tank (at least I've seen period/old pictures of windshields in this position).

How is this possible, even with todays better roads ? I think that there would be damage to windshield and parts , and to gas tank...no
Ford installed rubber bumpers on panel above rumble seat and handles, to keep top from damaging that area. What am I missing up front that would keep windshield/gas tank from being damaged ?

I like to drive without the windshield setup, but do not like taking it off and putting it back on each time.

Like the motorcycle guys say "and bugs in your teeth!"

I have a '29 Roadster and it has fixed stanchions so folding the windshield is not an option.

We also have a '30 Roadster that has the tiltable (?) stanchions, but it's not running so I haven't tried it.

Most, if not all, states require eye protection, either goggles or a windshield.
I'd prefer the windshield.
In the 80's I was riding my motorcycle on a logging trail in northern Minnesota, and a large insect hit me in the eye. It was either a deer fly, or horse fly, and my eye almost instantly swelled shut. It hurt like hell for a few days, and wasn't back to normal for about a week.

Well, I got an old leather helmet and goggles from a buddy, when I didn't put the windshield on. He wanted me to be 'safe' !

But, I've never laid it down forward, as wondering what is going to keep it from damage ?
Do you have a picture of yours being driven with windshield down forward ?
100+ out here everyday, so got me to thinking of taking it off again.

#4 reply has it right...the stanchion design for the 30-31 open cars has a "stop" position that keeps the glass safely above the gas cap area.

I would never drive with this in the down forward position. But it sure is useful for me when I have to trailer the car on an open trailer. I wrap in moving blankets in the down position and wrap with a strap, then take off the top and bows and travel with the back of the car forward. Any other way and it seems to cause lots of problems even at 65 MPH.

Hey Rick,
Good tips. I'm inclined to agree about not driving with down. In this case, I would like to see results, after someone drove with windshield down , one of more times. It just doesn't seem logical that there would be no damage.
