Default Rear Axle Rebuild

Today I assembled my rear axle rebuild with no gasket sealer using the following gaskets: Passenger Side - (1) 0.006, (1) 0.005. The drivers side - (1) 0.006, 0.005 and (1) 0.003. These are the gaskets that I found gave a good preload with the empty carrier. Please give your opinion on the backlash. When I grap the drive shaft you definitely hear a clicking sound. I found a sharp corner reference on the outer locking nut at the pinion and this reference is moving back and fourth 1/32 of an inch. Is this enough backlash? Everything seems to rotate smoothly and quietly. Thanks for all your help. Ed

1/32" is very near .030". That is about .010" too much. I always used a dial indicator with an extension through the fill hole on the center section on the later banjo rear axles to measure off of the ring gear teeth. I tried to find where to check on the model A but have not found the specific information yet. If done off the drive shaft then at what location from the center of the shaft?

You raise a good point on where I am measuring this backlash! I picked a sharp line on the outer circumference of the large jam nut for the pinion gear. This is about 1.18 in. from the center of the drive shaft. My measuring location is meaningless! I would guess that you need to measure the gap between one of the teeth of the ring gear and the pinion. I will have to think about this. Ed
