Help Identifying Brake Parts
Hi All,
My A has had several upgrades and I'm trying to determine what the parts are. My Brakes have been converted to hydraulic, how do I identify what system I have? The front hubs came off easy and used outer bearings Bower BT09074 and Timkenx A-1216, I think that means 1928-1948 Ford. Grease seal LYO 37002, which I found 1 forum post pointing to 46-48 Ford. I haven't gotten to the inner bearing because I haven't found replacement seals yet. Rear hubs aren't coming off easy so not sure if I need a special puller or just hit them with a block of wood around the perimeter. No idea how to identify this master cylinder. Any ideas? The rear hubs are on the axle which is tapered. you made need a puller or a knocker to go on the axle to release the hub. I think the hubs are 48"s but not sure.

This is on your "A"? Not sure of the M/C, but looks to be leaking pretty good (bad?). It looks like an early Mustang but could be any 60's Ford with a single M/C. Not sure on the Power Booster either. It does have the four mounting studs common with Ford Boosters.
Not sure power brakes are even needed on a Model A. With the 12" drum it should really STOP.

Wow hydraulics on a Model A. looks like late ford like 48. You will need a hub puller for the rear brakes remember to back off the brakes shoes.

Thanks for the tips.
Yea the master cylinder looks to have leaked in the past but it hasn't the last year I've owned it. Previous owner must have fixed it. Plenty of other leaks to keep me worried though... The car does stop good. I've been thinking I should find a dual master but that's low on the fix list. I keep the E-brake adjusted just in case. Thanks for the puller idea. Do I need a special puller like this that appears to use that grove? http://www.vintageprecision.com/products/hub_pullers/hub_puller_operating_instructions.html Or will a standard 3 jaw puller work? Good tip on backing the brakes off I would have forgotten about that. |

I've used a puller that I had from a previous project. Worked fine. There are pullers specific to the model A available from the vendors.

Pretty sure that the hubs/drums are 1940-42 Ford & Mercury.
1946-48 will interchange. |
