1937 Ford Car Bumpers
I have an original '37 coupe. I pulled it out of a barn where it had been sitting since 1953. It is complete but the rear bumper and brackets had been removed from the car and were sitting on the barn floor. I cleaned up the brackets and re-installed them. When I went to mount the bumper, it was too short for the bracket holes. Then I saw that the old, very crusty, rear bumper that I had removed from the brackets was longer and fit perfectly. I thought that the front and rear bumpers on a '37 were the same. They have the same part number. What's up? Do I have the wrong mounting brackets or is the rear bumper longer than the front bumper. I'd appreciate any guidance. Thanks. John

Re: 1937 Ford Car Bumpers
The 37 rear bumper is much longer with a sweeping curve at each end.
Pity you didn't live in New Zealand - I have a pretty good one sitting in my shed. Cheers, Chris.NZ. |

Re: 1937 Ford Car Bumpers
I would exchange it for 4 x 39 deluxe over-riders.

There is a set of 4 Bob Drake repro ones on the HAMB parts for sale at the moment.

Re: 1937 Ford Car Bumpers
I think I found one at ThirdGen Automotive. Michael Driskel has a bumper. I highly recommend those folks for early V-8 parts. Thanks.

Re: 1937 Ford Car Bumpers
I believe the 1937 Ford half-ton pickup used two 37 passenger car front bumpers.

I am still looking for a "driver" quality, original 1937 Ford rear car bumper. Thanks. [email protected]

Re: 1937 Ford Car Bumpers
This is what you are looking for, but this one is not for sale. This is fitted to an Australian 1937 Ford Deluxe Club Coupe. Notice that all Australian 1937 Fords had a special tail-light bracket to support the 1935/1936 Ford Tail Lights. Also, when you mount the bumper, make sure you don't mount it upside down? Next time you see a 1937 Ford, check to see if the bumper is mounted correctly. |

Re: 1937 Ford Car Bumpers
John, The Chassis parts book dated June, 1937 shows the front bar is part number 78-17757 and the rear bar is 78-17906-A for all passenger models, except body types 780 and 790. Body type 780 used a rear bar 78-17906-B.
Commercial models used the front bar 78-17757 for the rear bumper except for body type 77-820 which used the 78-17906-B. Now we need to go to the Benson Ford Research Library and see what the differences are in all these parts. Zeke |
