Re: Lacquer Paint
Winchester, Lacquer is super easy to correct blemishes. The only real issue is color match, which can be done easily these days by computer. Take a removable body panel such as a body color wheel or fender skirt into a paint store for that.
All you need is to clean the blemish and paint it on, a warm day in the sun allows 2nd and 3rd coats for correct paint thickness. Tool it down and rub it out for a perfect job. ...Again, there is no compromise for correct color match.

Re: Lacquer Paint
Alan,
Don't you mean 'sand' (with 1200 -1500 wet paper) rather than 'tool'? |

If you start out sanding, you can get low spots around the repair. We're talking small bumpy dabs of paint, so they can be easily tooled with a razor blade down to near surface. Rubbing compound on a small block minimizes the total area while keeping it flat to the surface. I'm not a painter, just a guy with an old lacquer paint job that had a hundred tiny paint dings when I got it.

Re: Lacquer Paint
You can still get small quantities of touch up paint. Go to a good paint store.

Re: Lacquer Paint
Bill Hirsch carries nitrocelulose lacquer. Black is the common call but he advertized custom color mixes. A person would have to call for info but that won't help in matching specific colors.
Testors has rattle can lacquer but it is sold in specific colors too. A person with a good eye could mix colors if they had all the different toning colors & primary colors to work with. Most stuff availble now is acrylic lacquer and there isn't even a lot of that available like there used to be. |

Re: Lacquer Paint
I bought a 79 Seville new and withi one year had a minor accident. The insurance company had their body shop do the repair work. The shop told me that the factory paint was acrylic lacquer. They put the paint on too thick and within a year it cracked terribly. I had them redo it and the same thing happened again within a year. I got disgusted and let it be. Evidently that type of paint has to be put on in thin layers.

Re: Lacquer Paint
Bill Hirsch is a good source, but only sells large quantities of Nitro Lacquer. Call Adam at Hibernia Restorations, 973 627 1882, Hirsch referred them to me. Both in NJ.
Adam is the paint guru and a painter so he can mix it and tell how to use it. I bought a couple quarts of '29 Model A maroon from them. You can likely buy just a quart also. |

Most of us likely remember when local car guys used to brag about having 20 coats of hand rubbed lacquer. It can be done but a guy has to have a lot of patients and strong arms to get it done right. |
